A few interesting facts:
•Male Common Jays practice a specialised behaviour called mud-puddling, where they gather on damp sand & soil to absorb vital minerals. To maximise their intake, they use a "filter-feeding" technique by using their long proboscis to continuously suck up water, extract the nutrients, and rapidly pump the excess water out to dissolve and re-absorb more minerals. When a group gathers on the damp ground, they display a unique sense of coordination. Almost all the butterflies will face the exact same direction, straight into the wind, while keeping their wings erect and constantly quivering. You will rarely catch a Common Jay sitting still unless it is puddling or sleeping. They are incredibly fast, erratic fliers that dart through forest paths and gardens. Even when they stop to feed on flowers, they keep their wings fluttering at lightning-fast speeds, closely mimicking the hovering behavior of a hummingbird.
